Definition
Metacognitive knowledge: meta-conceptual, meta-procedural, meta-dispositional.
Knowledge about knowledge: Metacognition refers to the process of reflecting on and directing one’s thinking.
Why?
Helps learners become self-directed.
How to?
Do
- Encourage students to self-assess and self-reflect.
- Target metacognition as learning goals
- Make metacognition visible
- e.g. organize knowledge using concept maps
- make knowledge structure explicit to a novice (Ambrose et al., p. 43).
- Allow creative silence time for students to think and reflect.
Do NOT
- Leave no time for students to reflect.
